MARY’S WORDS ABOUT HERSELF

“Over the years, I became aware of the deeper intent to the many luncheons Nana set aside for just me, her eldest granddaughter. We spent the greater part of the afternoons focused on the travel and adventures of her sister, Great Aunt Molly, the founder of Physical Therapy. Stories would come alive with precious artifacts left to her. She wanted history to know this story. There were letters from US Army Generals and photos of soldiers receiving physical therapy for injuries sustained on the battlefields of WWI. There were Aunt Molly’s letters from China in the 1930s and her personal diary written while held captive in Japanese internment camps. These source documents were passed to me as part of my family history. Great Aunt Molly’s story left a profound impact me and a sense of personal pride and place, but also the feeling of responsibility to share the legacy of the incomparable Mary McMillan with the world. This unprecedented historical saga is my Great Aunt Molly’s story as it has never been told before and will memorialize her as a major force in women’s history.”
