Mary McMillan:
The Mother Of Physical Therapy
Mary McMillan was as instrumental in founding physical therapy, as Florence Nightingale influenced the profession of modern nursing. Mary knew from an early age that she was meant to help, heal, and assist those who were in pain. She was fearless and unafraid to help all who suffered, no matter the peril. Mary was the key figure in organizing the profession of physical therapy in the first half of the twentieth century. …

Great Book
Really interesting autobiography of the person who invented modern physical therapy. Although not officially an autobiography it is written as one because the authors based it on diaries and letters. I just wish they had used a professional editor to "fix" some syntax issues and page formatting. McMillan's actual PT book (1921) is available as a free download and complements this book well.

I loved the book
Miss McMillan was an inspiration throughout her life and continues to inspire with this very interesting book about her values and her career of helping others. I do not generally read biographies but found her story compelling. She made a difference in her life and seemed to enjoy her life to the max. Miss McMillan is an excellent example of grit and resilience. She was always working on her next project and determined to make a difference. I was amazed that in her 50's she left a good job in the US to move to China, learned to speak the language, and loved the culture. How she survived a POW camp in Manila in her late 50's/early 60's was remarkable.
By the end of the book I felt like I knew this extraordinary woman who founded the physical therapy profession in the United States and who was the first President of the American Physical Therapy Association, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary next year.

Timely, inspiring and positive role model for those in health and healing field
I just finished reading the book Mary McMillan - The Mother of Physical Therapy and was so inspired by how one woman could make such a difference in our world.
Like Mary, I have been following my heart to teach others about health and well-being. Mary not only followed her passion to heal others, but kept her faith, resolve and dedication to help others and ease their pain for over 60 years, through two world wars and many unforseen tragedies in her life.
Our world can learn enough about women role models who lead movements throughout history that changed our world for the better. Who knew this one determined person could alter so many cynical doctor’s negative opinions about the importance of how physical therapy and massage could heal and ease their patient’s suffering.
Anyone who is in the medical, physical therapy and health fields should be required to read this important biography as part of their education curriculum.
And everyone else should read her story because they will be truly inspired by an extraordinary woman’s life and work. You will be whisked away into a her riviting story, and experience a glimpse through intimate details of important historical moments in history.
All will be richly rewarded if they read this book.
